Khayal Gayaki, as it exists today in the sub-continent, has been
developed, nourished and brought to perfection under the aegis of different
Gharanas founded by some the great masters of this art during the past two
hundred years. Hadood Hassoo Khan (Gwalior) Tan Ras Khan (Delhi), Behram Khan
(Jaipur), Ghagge Khuda Bakhsh (Agra), Abdul Karim Khan (Kirana) Ali
Bakhsh Khan and Fateh Ali Khan (Patiala)- such are the immortals who have
shaped and chiseled classical music into its present noble form.
The gharana system originated and flourished under the lavish patronage
of princely statues of the sub-continent, but under the new social order
with the disappearance of these states from the scene, the gharanas too have
gone to seed and are fast disintegrating. The certainly would be a most
undeserved and sad end to an institution which has been a most
watchful and able custodian of our traditional classical music for the last two
centuries
We are issuing these Lessons of music as our first step towards the
rehabilitation of Classical Music in Pakistan. In the history of traditionally
Khayal music there have been masters who had their own peculiar style of voice
intonation of which they based their individual artistic discipline for delineation of rages.
This style and
Kaeyda they imparted to their disciples and their progeny who, in their
turn, transmitted it from master to disciple, from father to son from
generation to generation, till the seed implanted by the originator of
the style grew into a tall stately three. The strength of a gharana lay in
its ability to assimilate fresh ideas and to incorporate them with its own
system without losing its distinctive identity.
We are presenting 10 Thaths and prominent Rags of these Thaths.
